As St Helena awaits the commencement of commercial flights we take a look at some of the accommodation providers who have served visitors from the RMS St Helena, and who are now getting ready for the access changes. This week we shine a light on Harris’ Guest House in Jamestown.
Harris’ Guest House, comprising of a double en-suite, twin, and family room, has been welcoming visitors by sea since December 1999, offering B&B, half board and full board accommodation. As their business draws closer to its 20 year anniversary, Irene and Donald Harris are looking forward to also welcoming guests arriving by air who would like to spend time in the island’s capital near the ocean.
Sampling the local cuisine on St Helena is an important part of any visit. Those who dine during their stay will enjoy meals such as stuffed tuna, fishcakes and local roasted pork. Guests are welcome to request certain meals if they like with a St Helenian twist.
Irene notes her most famous visitor was the BBC presenter Ben Fogle who arrived on the same RMS St Helena voyage as the Princess Royal, in November 2002. “He stayed here for a week” Irene said, “He calls me Mrs ‘H’”.
Irene said: “It’s been nearly 20 years, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. My favourite part is meeting different people.”
