Introducing Wise Monkeys Media Productions

With the launch of a successful weekly sports magazine, Halftime, St Helena’s newest media production company is set for great things.

The Wise Monkeys appeared out of (what felt like) nowhere, and started producing Halftime magazine within weeks of establishing their social media presence and first alerting the island to their arrival.

The guys behind Wise Monkeys, Damien O’Bey, Luke Bennett and Simon Benjamin, are offering a full range of services to the island community as well as the weekly magazine, including photography, videography and graphic design work.

When asked about their business, Damien said:

“We started Wise Monkeys Media Productions because we wanted to form a media company that embraced being Saint. We wanted to promote our island to potential visitors through the eyes of young Saints.”

Halftime magazine hit the shops on the 12 April. The team has now published four issues covering a variety of island activities. Damien commented:

“We are all passionate about sports and felt that local sports weren’t getting the justice they deserved, so our starting point as a media company was to launch Halftime magazine targeted at the local sports fan.”

Readers of the magazine will find that St Helena culture forms a large part of the content in addition to sports. The team offers full colour advertising to all businesses and individuals on the island, and although the content is solely written by Wise Monkeys presently there may be a chance for freelancers to contribute in the future. Damien said:

“We have received quite a bit of positive and constructive feedback since the magazine launched. It’s selling well with a lot of the readers appreciating it being printed in colour. We now have a print run of 75 copies.”

Wise Monkeys at work

As their business grows, the Wise Monkeys plan to make their mark to an international audience.  Fans will soon be able to visit their website (currently under construction), as well as a dedicated app for mobile users.  A YouTube channel is next on the list and will feature weekly highlight reels from local sports, as well as TV style news reports on other topics relevant to the island.

Damien concluded:

“We have quite a bit in the pipeline. It would be wrong to reveal too much at this stage but one of our long term goals is to have our own radio station.  Until that goal is reached we will be exploring the use of podcasts.”

Islanders can pick up copies of Halftime every Wednesday at Half Tree Hollow Supermarket, Andy’s Shop, A&D’s Mini Mart and The Star.
