The beginning of the year is traditionally a period when travellers across the world start planning their holidays for the year ahead. To ensure that St Helena is on the radar, Helena Bennett, Tourist Office Manager, and Juliet Williams, Tourism Officer will be representing the Island at some of the top travel shows in the UK and beyond.
Destinations Holiday & Travel Show, 2-5 February
The first show on the horizon is the Destinations Holiday and Travel Show at Olympia London from 2 to 5 February. Destinations is attended by hundreds of independent tour operators, tourist boards, media and consumers; and is the UK’s biggest and longest running travel show. St Helena will be stationed in the Latin American Travel Association (LATA) Village, exhibiting alongside the likes of Chile, Guyana, Costa Rica and Belize.
During Destinations, Helena and Juliet will attend the African Travel & Tourism Association’s (Atta) winter networking event, and will also be guests at a reception hosted by LATA and the All Party Latin American Group on the Commons’ Terrace in the Palace of Westminster.
Outdoor Adventure & Camping Show, 16-19 February
In addition to Destinations, Helena and Juliet will attend the Outdoor Adventure and Camping Show at Excel London from 16 to 19 February, the UK’s largest outdoor show. Although St Helena is not exhibiting, they will be meeting tour operators and media. Visitors who attend these shows are usually outdoor enthusiasts, hungry for offers and news of new activities, buying the latest products, gear and equipment.
London Cruise Show, 18-19 February
Next stop will be the London Cruise Show held at Olympia London from 18 to 19 February. Showcasing resort ships, promoting thrilling adventure cruises, with advice and free talks, this travel show offers an exclusive look at cruise tourism, which St Helena will be experiencing in April as the first ships of the season begin to visit.
Seatrade Cruise Global, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Following the London shows, Helena will continue promoting St Helena at the Seatrade Cruise Global at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This show brings together members of the global cruise business including cruise lines, suppliers, travel agents and partners. At this time Juliet will remain in the UK and attend the International Confex, the UK’s leading show for the events industry, which will assist Juliet’s understanding of events planning and the international market.
Bicentenary of Napoleon’s death in 2021
In addition to the many travel shows, Helena and Juliet will visit the Musée de l’Armée in Paris to discuss the Island’s Napoleonic connections and the bicentenary of Napoleon’s death in 2021.
Director of Tourism Chris Pickard said: “The beginning of the year is traditionally the time in the UK and across most of Europe and North America where people start to dream and to seriously plan where they will visit in the coming 24 months. The reason so many travel shows take place at this time is because this is when any destination, but especially a new destination like St Helena, needs to be in front of and talking face-to-face with the travelling public, travel trade and travel media.”
