Both the RMS St Helena and St Helena have been shortlisted in the Cruise International Awards 2017, the UK’s most prestigious cruise industry awards.
The RMS St Helena has once again been shortlisted in the Cruise Line category for ‘Best for Adventure’. The island’s lifeline is scheduled to go offline in February 2018 after 27 years of service, and this shortlisting is an honour of her final year of serving St Helena.
St Helena shortlisted as Best Destination
As well as the nomination for the RMS St Helena, St Helena has been shortlisted as a destination for the first time in the Cruise Experience category, ‘Best Destinations (World)’.
Almost equidistant from the African and South American continents, St Helena has a rich history of welcoming visitors by sea. We’re undoubtedly one of the most unique destinations to be featured in the awards line up!
The island is visited by numerous cruise ships each year, from cruise lines such as Fred Olsen, Silver Sea Cruises, Hapag Lloyd Cruises, Crystal Cruises and more. The island welcomed an impressive 2,348 visitors from cruise lines and smaller vessels in 2016.
St Helena is also a popular destination for the yachting community, and in 2016 she welcomed 186 vessels and 669 yachtsmen. Some of these visitors were involved in competitions such as the World Arc Rally, that makes a stopover in January each year.
A year since the RMS St Helena was in London
The nomination comes exactly a year after the RMS St Helena sailed up the Thames in London, mooring alongside HMS Belfast on her historical last voyage to the UK. During a special reception for the Princess Royal, Princess Anne spoke of her time on board the RMS St Helena during her visit to St Helena in 2002. She has been the only member of her family to arrive by the RMS.
