It was just like being back on St Helena!
Following on from our post yesterday on Reading Sports Day, former Tourism Director of St Helena (2010-12), Mike Dean, has written us a post about attending the day on behalf of Enterprise St Helena.
Last Sunday was the annual Reading Sports, and, at the request of Enterprise St Helena, Diane and I along with Business Adviser Lisa Ryan, manned a stand updating Saints about opportunities on island as the airport project progresses. I had heard about Reading Sports whilst I was working on island, but wow…we were overwhelmed!
From the time we started to put up the stand right through until early evening, all three of us were kept busy with people visiting the stand and requesting information. Lots of people watched the information presentation that was running – with the aircraft landing simulation of special interest to many – and many people enquired about the potential for their business ideas and thoughts. It was very encouraging to see and hear such positive attitudes and comments, and to see how many people picked up the information about going back to St Helena. I got the feeling of a real momentum building towards the airport completion, with people thinking seriously about the prospects that are opening up on island.
We were pleased too to be able to chat to some people who shortly will be heading out to work on the island, as well as to meet some old friends. It was so nice to see people who came and sought us out to say hello, and to catch up with friends and former colleagues. As Diane said…it was just like being back on island, albeit without the wonderful views. Lisa found it a more than helpful introduction to St Helena, and went away with a page full of notes to think about before she even gets to the island!
It was amazing to be surrounded by so many Saints again…and in true Saint fashion, partying as only Saints can. Congratulations to the St Helena Association for putting on such a great and well run event…and we’re already looking forward to next year.
