Magma Way Tours
Historical Town Walks, Castell Collection, Botanical and Scenic tours
Magma Way is a privately owned, island registered company, operating for more than a decade offering special guided group tours for visitors to the island. The company, led by islander Basil George, uses local guides for each tour, each with specialist knowledge and giving an insight into the place and the people of this remarkable island. These special guided group tours are not only of general interest but also geared to history, ornithology, the environment, adventure tours and lecture tours in partnership with renowned overseas tour companies.
The group tours are offered when the RMS St Helena, the ship that brings provisions and people to the island, does a shuttle to Ascension Island allowing an eight night stay on St Helena. The core content of a Magma Way itinerary includes the following items:
(a) Walk around the historical lower Jamestown as a backdrop when visitors first arrive as an introduction to the place and people
(b) Scenic Island Tour around the Island experiencing the spectacular and contrasting scenery. There is a visit to an Enterprise Centre for disabled people where local crafts are made, as well as visits to the Boer cemetery (there were 6000 Boer prisoners on the Island for two years at the start of the 20th century)
(c) Napoleonic sites – visit to where Napoleon was imprisoned and died on the Island: the Briars, Longwood House and Tomb. Included is a visit to the site of the observatory of Edmund Halley, the astronomer who stayed on the Island for almost a year from 1677-78
(d) Boat excursion – seabirds, dolphins and early East India Company fortifications along the lee coast of the Island.
(e) Botanical – a visit to a Conservation Centre to see work being done on saving St Helena’s unique and endangered endemic plants
(f) Eastern vistas – Tour with the St Helena National Trust to see the endangered “Wirebird”, the Island’s only surviving land bird as well as planting an endemic tree, being part of a project to re-establish a forest of original trees.
The balance of the content of a group tour itinerary is adjusted to meet the needs and requirements of the clients of an overseas tour company. Magma Way group tours are designed to give visitors an experience that captures the history, spectacular scenery and the life-style of a people and their community on a “hideaway” island.
Magma Way has designed its own special Hideaway Tour that includes the core activities, with added focus on people, including slavery, its abolition and the establishment by Britain of a squadron and Vice-Admiralty court on the Island when, over a period of three decades from 1840, approximately 25,000 slaves were rescued by the Squadron, brought here and freed.
The third repeat “Hideaway” group tour took place in September this year, 2013 with the following comment from the group “Hideaway Tour excellent and good value. We thank you for looking after us for the last eight days and giving us an insight into Island life.”
The visit to SHAPE, the Enterprise Centre of disabled people was of special interest as an establishment set up and run by the local community – www.shape.co.sh .
