Open Day at Mantis St Helena Hotel

As the construction of the new Mantis St Helena Hotel in Jamestown enters the final stages, the doors were thrown open for a peek behind the scenes at the property taking shape.

Those who attended the open day on 3 June were welcomed by Graham Vass, Development Director, who shared an overview of progress to date as well as talking through work still to be completed prior to the official opening, scheduled for October 2017. Director of the St Helena Hotel Development, Susan O’Bey, told those present “this is to give you a clearer idea of what the hotel will look like when it opens.”

Before the visitors entered the construction site, Graham walked them through the structure of the building. The property will feature eight heritage rooms forming the upstairs of the historical 1, 2 and 3 Main Street building with views of the Castle Gardens; and 22 contemporary rooms that have been built at the back of the property and will have views of Jacob’s Ladder, James Bay and upper Jamestown. There are plans for the reception area to hold one of the models of the RMS St Helena, along with artefacts found on site during the heritage dig conducted before construction got underway.

Following the visit, Graham said:

“The open day was very successful. We had over 140 people attend, which was quite a lot more than we expected. There was a high level of interest in the hotel and people had many questions, which was a large part of the reason we held the event; for people to see the Hotel, to find out more information and to raise any concerns or considerations that they might have.

“One of the points of interests was the food and beverage offerings, along with the size of the restaurant and bar, and whether it was designed just for visitors, or did it have the space to welcome the island, and of course it does.”
