St Helena at We Are Africa Travel Show
The month of May always takes St Helena Tourism to the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, to the successful We Are Africa trade show (14-17 May), attended this year by Tourism Manager Melissa Fowler and Tourism Officer Shelley Magellan-Wade.
We Are Africa allows key international buyers and press the opportunity to encounter the continent’s most extraordinary experiences under one roof. The trade show also includes a conference, awards ceremony and various networking events.
“I am very impressed with the organisation of the event, and the different offering of exhibitors and buyers. It has been very exciting and humbling to have met numerous people who all have a profound interest in St Helena.
“These past three days have made me extremely proud to be a Saint Helenian and to have the opportunity to showcase our unique little Island.”
With a full appointment schedule of 50 meetings and additional drop in smiles and chats, the team were fully booked with tour operators, media and members of the travel trade at stand F17.
After answering questions about whale sharks, diving, hiking, heritage and history along with types of accommodation available, Melissa reported:
“The overall response has been positive excitement, and general curiosity about the island. Most of the companies we have met wanted to know more about how to get to St Helena as they were aware flights had started. We found that the news of having an additional mid-week flight during peak season was ideal for some of their clients who might prefer a shorter stay.
“Everyone said that St Helena is a unique destination to offer to their cliental and look forward to working with St Helena Tourism and on-island businesses.”
Following meetings with tour operators with clients from all over the world, including Italy, China, India, Australia, USA, Austria, Ukraine and South African, Melissa said:
“The interest is overwhelming! We Are Africa is an ideal setting to sell St Helena, by putting us on the map internationally as a tourist destination.”
The next travel shows on St Helena Tourism’s list will be Experience Latin America and Experience Africa in London in June.
