Meet Jonathan, the world's oldest land animal

Jonathan is a 193 year old (2025) giant Seychelles tortoise. He holds two Guinness World Records: the oldest known living land animal and the oldest chelonian to have ever lived. Since 1882, Jonathan has grazed the lawns of Plantation House, the Governor's residence. Visitors can meet Jonathan by booking a Plantation House tour.

Climb Jacob's Ladder

Challenge yourself to complete the 699 steps of Jacob's Ladder. Once completed, visit the Museum of St Helena to collect a commemorative certificate. Fitness fanatics can also attempt to beat the record for fastest ascent, which currently stands at 4 minutes and 40.75 seconds.

The island boasts 25 Green Flag accredited trails known as Post Box Walks. This ultimate hiking challenge offers a diverse range of experiences, with trails varying from 0.5km to 12km. Explore High Knoll Fort

This centuries-old fort is definitely worth a visit. The massive structure was originally constructed in 1798 (without machinery). Although it was never called upon, it was a defensive structure and stronghold for the island’s population in case of invasion, six canons were mounted at the top and the rooms underneath were used to house gunpowder. Today, High Knoll is free to explore.

St Helena has award-winning coffee. The island's green-tipped bourbon Arabica coffee has remained free from disease and cross-breeding since its importation in the 1700s from Yemen. Tour Napoleonic sites

Napoleon was exiled to St Helena in 1815, where he remained until his death in 1821. During his time on the island, he resided first at the Briars Pavilion while Longwood House was built. Longwood House, his final residence, has been restored to accurately reflect its appearance at the time of his death. Although Napoleon's remains were later removed and returned to France, his initial burial site, Napoleon's Tomb, remains. All three sites available to visit.
